The mask of pregnancy, also called Melasma or Chloasma, is a skin condition that results in darkened and blotchy patches of skin on your forehead, cheeks and upper lip. This not-so-fun side effect of pregnancy is the result of hormones stimulating the production of melanin in your body. The good news is that these blotches often disappear a few months after the baby is born. In the meantime, here is how to unmask.

  • Sunlight aggravates the condition and will make the spots darker. Because UV rays penetrate windows, make sure you wear SPF 30 every day. If you are going to be outside, wear a wide-brimmed hat or stay under the shade.

  • Pick up a concealer that is one shade lighter than your skin tone. The thicker concealers in a tube or pot usually provide better coverage. To get the best match for your skin, go to a make-up counter to try on different concealers. Bobbi Brown cosmetics carries a great line of concealers.
  • Highlight your eyes and lips by wearing eye-opening mascara and sheer lipglosses.

If the melasma remains after baby is born, talk to your doctor about other treatments, such as a lightening product, to even out your skin.
