Buying secondhand maternity clothing, either through hand-me-downs from friends or from purchasing at thrift/consignment shops, is a great way to save money while staying stylish. I have recently talked about what to look for when buying secondhand tops, now I’ll give you tips for buying gently-used pants, denim and skirts.

  • As with tops, scout out the designer labels first. These clothes will be well-made and will be more likely to hold their shape with frequent wear and tear.
  • Look for trendy denim that is cut to fit under your belly with a boot cut leg. This is a slimming and hip look for pregnant mamas.
  • Buy pants that fit you now, but also have an adjustable waist (buttons, drawstring, etc.) for your expanding belly. Avoid buying pants that are too big for you right now because you don’t know what will fit your pregnant body in the future. That’s right, more then likely you will have to make a second trip in a couple of months time.
  • Inspect the clothing for stains, tears or missing buttons. You may be able to easily repair the garment (sewing on a button) or may be able to get a price reduction on the item.
  • Make sure you try on skirts that have an adjustable waistband to ensure they are not too stretched out for your bump.
  • Some great secondhand finds would be pants, denim, cargo pants and skirts. For sanitary reasons, buy items like leggings (retails for $20 and under) and workout pants brand new.
