Secondhand style: Tops
July 18, 2007
You don’t have to blow your baby’s college fund buying maternity clothes to stay looking stylish when you can look just as good wearing secondhand clothes.
Not sure where to find gently-used maternity wear? Talk to friends and family to see if they have any maternity clothes they would be willing to lend out. Thrift and consignment shops also a great place to find maternity clothes.
Some great secondhand finds would be tops, pants, dresses and formal wear. I would steer clear of any undergarments (bras, underwear, bathing suits), as well as shoes.
Here are some things to look for when considering secondhand maternity tops:
- You can find some designer duds for a fraction of the price at thrift and consignment shops. Scout out these shirts first because they are usually made out of great fabrics that keep their shape and style for long-term wear.
- Inspect the shirt for stains, tears or missing buttons. If you are handy with a needle and thread, you may want to consider if repairing the garment will be worth if to you.
- Try on form-fitting tops to ensure they are not stretched-out. Every woman carries her “bump” a little different (some carry high, some carry low) so you want to make sure the top will fit your contour.
- Consider seasonal items: Stretch your dollar by purchasing seasonal clothes (tube tops for summer, jacket for winter) secondhand, and splurging more on long-term wear items (light-weight tops or layering camis).
