Fashion for the high-maintenance gal
by Betsy Gartrell-Judd

Sure you want to look good, but don't you want to feel good, too? Of course you do. For our pregnant selves, comfort is of paramount importance. In that spirit, here is my best advice:

1. Go for bikini briefs and low-rise pants: I remember going to work wearing maternity undies, a slip and a skirt. THREE waistbands! That's for the birds. By my second pregnancy I learned that not only will non-maternity panties work just fine, they are infinitely better. Get the claustrophobic waistbands away from my tummy. And let's just hope low-rise pants never go out of fashion for the maternity set.

2. Wear a supportive bra: You'll probably need to get a new one. Go to your nearest upscale department store and get professionally fitted. It's free, and it's so worth it.

3. Dress in layers, so you can strip: You are a walking hormone and because you are circulating a lot more blood than usual, you are going to be a lot more HOT. Dress yourself with this in mind. If you must wear a heavy sweater, wear a light shirt under it so you can, inevitably, shed the sweater later.

4. Soft, easy-care fabrics: You are a walking hormone. You don't need hassles... Stick with soft, breathable clothing that is wash and wear. Do you need to be ironing? No. Check care instructions religiously before you buy. You'll probably find yourself cycling through your maternity wardrobe faster than you would your regular one, so do invest in clothing with of quality construction and made with durable fabrics that can bear frequent washing.

5. Mix and match: Buy clothes in the colors that most flatter you and try to stick with those that coordinate well with each other. You'll find that you'll get a lot more bang for your buck.

6. Low-heeled shoes: Pregnancy doesn't have to cramp your foot... style. Yes, your feet may get bigger - as much as one-half size bigger! And the added weight of baby won't make those heels any more pleasant to wear. Heels are fine for special occasions - occasionally, but do adopt a comfy, fashionable pair of low-heeled shoes for everyday wear.

7. Let your fingers do the typing: Shop online! You can shop extensive online collections from a variety of maternity fashion outlets. Get what you like at the best prices, and save your aching back, your aching feet, your aching pubic bone, etc. in the process. Start here!
