All tips : Get fit : Baby's first marathon

Baby's first marathon
by Nancy and Betsy

Sure, exercising during pregnancy will help you cope with labor and birth. But according to James M. Clapp, M.D., author of the book Exercising Through Your Pregnancy (Addicus Books, April 2002), it also prepares your baby for the big event.

Clapp explains that the moderate stress of exercise produces certain adaptations in the baby such as a bigger, healthier placenta and enhanced ability to deal with short decreases in oxygen. Dr. Clapp's years of research support the claim that women can exercise before, during and after their pregnancies. "Women who exercise feel better [and] perform better," he says. "Their babies will be stronger physiologically and perhaps better developed neurologically."
