What's my name again? Pregnancy brain
by Nancy and Betsy
You walk into the kitchen and can't remember why you're there. You can't find your car keys... until someone points out that you're holding them in your hand.
It's commonly called "pregnancy brain" (or, as Pregnancy & Baby journal writer Minsun Park termed it, "Dumbness Induced by Pregnancy Syndrome"), and you're not the only one who has it! But now, there's something you didn't have before: research backing up your claims of memory loss.
According to a study in The Journal of Reproductive Medicine, researchers in Mumbai, India, gave 50 women short-term memory tests (seeing if they could remember a paragraph they’d just read) and then checked out their neurotransmitter blood levels. Then the researchers found out what we have known for years - pregnant women will score lower on memory tests than their non-expectant counterparts. In fact, during the second trimester, women were the most affected. There appears to be a correlation to a drop in the neurotransmitter brain chemicals serotonin, dopamine and epinephrine as pregnancy progresses, although, for reasons not yet understood, third trimester memory scores were higher than those of the previous three-month period.
The authors of the study concede there's more research to be done. In the meantime, you might want to read this paragraph once more, just to be sure you remember it...
