Moms weigh in on weight gain
by Real moms-to-be
It's tough for some women to come to terms with putting on extra pounds during pregnancy. Sometimes explaining that weight gain to your partner is even harder! Here's what some moms-to-be halfway through their pregnancies had to say...
"I am pretty athletic and have built a lot of muscle mass between horseback riding and working out at the gym…Well, now that I've gained 11 pounds for pregnancy, I weigh a huge 174. I just can't handle that number, and I know it’s only going to get bigger. Today my husband came to the doctor with me. I told him to go in another room when I got weighed, but the nurse said it out loud and he heard how much I weighed! He said he would've never guessed I weighed that (I really don't look it at all). Now I am totally humiliated by this. We have a very open relationship, but my weight is something I just can't discuss with a single person — not even him. I am so embarrassed he knows I weigh that much now." - Msmariah
"Muscle weighs more than fat, so the scales are going to be deceiving. Don't worry about the numbers; just worry about how you feel. If you are happy with how you look, enjoy it! Don't let the numbers scare you, or make you think you have to lose weight, because you don't! You're happy and healthy, and that's the important part." - Laura
"I am also trying to hide the amount I weigh from my husband, which strikes me as a kind of pathetic and sick. He keeps saying that he dreads me being over 200 pounds, which he has no business saying, and he knows that by the time the baby is almost ready, I will be 200 pounds or more!" - Petunia
"I am really sensitive about my weight - I am 5'9" and weigh between 165 and 172 when not pregnant. I work out a lot and I’m very active. I admit I’d like to weigh less because our society has made us feel those numbers are too heavy, but I feel comfortable in my skin and clothes, and I am healthy. In earlier years, I looked skeletal if my weight was less than 145. Now that I'm pregnant, I weighed 178 at my last doctor’s visit — so I gained about six pounds [since] my 17-week visit. In fact, when I got on the scales, the nurse said, 'This can't be right — you don't weigh that much,' and my husband boldly stated, 'Oh yes she does!'" - Patti
"Don't feel bad about your weight. For one thing, you are pregnant, so you're going to gain a little. And if your hubby doesn't think you look what you weigh, chances are no one else does, either." - Amanda
