All tips : Healthy ideas : Beating back labor

Beating back labor
by Nancy and Betsy

Posterior presentation, also called occiput posterior (OP) position, occurs when a baby faces toward the mother's front instead of toward her back. Labor with a baby in a posterior presentation tends to be more difficult than usual, because the baby's head does not fit as well into the pelvis and against the cervix. The baby also will have to rotate more to get into position for delivery.

If the hard bone in the back of the baby's head presses into your back, labor - yes, the oft-mentioned "back labor" - is typically more intense. Pelvic rocking and squatting may also help the baby rotate and end the back pain.
