Exercise your way to a better birth By now, we all know the many benefits of exercise. During pregnancy, exercise benefits you even more.

According to the February 2002 issue of The Physician and Sports Medicine, pregnant women who exercise are likely to return to their pre-pregnancy shapes sooner, feel increased energy and fend off stress more readily.

But wait -- there's more! James M. Clapp, M.D., author of the book Exercising Through Your Pregnancy (Addicus Books, April 2002), reports that women who exercise throughout pregnancy also reap the following benefits:

Deliver seven to eight days sooner, but are more likely to carry to at least 37 weeks

Are 35% less likely to need pain relief during labor

Are 50% less likely to have membranes ruptured artificially

Are 50% less likely to need labor induced with Pitocin

Are 50% less likely to need an episiotomy

Are 75% less likely to need a cesarean or forceps delivery

Have one-third shorter labors

Are more likely to breastfeed
