Minimizing the look of darker roots
by Karen Shelton
Question: I've stopped coloring my hair because I'm pregnant and just want to be extra careful. How can I make the darker roots less noticeable?
Hair expert Karen Shelton of HairBoutique.com answers!
There are various options that may minimize the appearance of dark roots. Here are some tips:
- Avoid sharp or straight middle parts that draw immediate
attention to new growth.
- Experiment with messy crisscross parts that allow you to hide
roots under layers of hair.
- Wear hair curly or wavy close to the roots. Textured hair will
draw attention away from the root area.
- Customize an at-home herbal rinse to minimize the roots. Brew
and steep herbal tea bags in spring water. Refrigerate the tea overnight and rinse through newly shampooed locks. Try chamomile for blonde strands, raspberry or ginger for red and rosemary or black tea for dark locks. Avoid acidic fruits such as lemons which can cause even more root discoloration over time.
- Consider using a vegetable color touch-up stick by Roux for the
roots. Another option is using color enhancing shampoo and conditioner. Concentrate the formula on the roots. Mine, ARTec, Aveda and Mastey all make color shampoos, conditioners and gels that are safe for pregnant women. Medical experts tend to agree that the biggest risk with hair coloring during pregnancy is the inhalation of the strong chemical odors. Vegetable colors and hennas are generally free of dangerous odors and may be a good option if you can't wait until your baby is born to do a major color overhaul.
- Use a color enhancing shampoo between applications to enhance and maintain the color. The color shampoos like Mastey's Colour Refreshing Shampoo, ARTec and Aveda's color shampoos are specifically designed to keep your color fresh as long as possible. Be sure to use the color shampoos religiously to maintain your color. The color shampoos will help you keep your color looking good until it is time for the next application. If you don't wish to use a color enhancing shampoo, then at least use the most gentle shampoo that you can.
Best of luck!
