Cat skills: Toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasmosis: It's a scary-sounding name for the disease caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which can live in meat and in cat feces. It's also why someone else must change your cat's litter box while you are pregnant. Here are some tips for avoiding this nasty bug:

  • While trying to conceive and during your pregnancy, let someone else clean the kitty box;
  • Wear gloves when gardening (you never know where the neighborhood cats have been) and wash your hands afterwards;
  • Carefully wash all surfaces that the cat may have come in contact with, especially in the kitchen;
  • Practice good food safety by cleansing hands, utensils and foods. Many families have certain cutting boards and utensils that are used just for meats and can be washed properly after food preparation;
  • Avoid any undercooked meat or fish.
