All tips : Get fit : Some like it hot: Bikram yoga

Some like it hot: Bikram yoga
by Nancy and Betsy

It may be a hot trend, but if you're pregnant or trying to conceive, Bikram yoga, or "hot yoga," is not for you.

Personal trainer and author Birgitta Gallo of Expecting Fitness (www.ExpectingFitness.com) says Bikram during pregnancy is "completely inadvisable and dangerous." Those 100-plus degree rooms and demanding, sweaty workouts surround your body with heat.

In theory, the high temperature will warm your muscles and, in turn, help prevent strain and injury. While you may love the heat, your baby can't cool down, which could put him in distress. You will also sweat a lot and may become dehydrated - putting your baby at further risk.

But just because Bikram's out of the question for now, that doesn't mean you can't enjoy yoga. Gallo says that, with your caregiver's approval, you can go ahead and do "almost any yoga pose that feels good, and what that means depends on the woman, her stage of pregnancy and how much yoga she's done previously." As long as you're not uncomfortable and drink plenty of water before, during and after your workout, you should be able to enjoy your yoga freely!
