Coloring your hair: The root of the matter
by Nancy and Betsy
Can you color your hair during pregnancy? The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said in December 2001, "Hair dyes are most likely safe to use during pregnancy since very little is absorbed through the skin." But if you still want to be on the safe side and have stopped coloring your hair for now, you may wonder how you can make the darker roots less noticeable. HairBoutique.com's Karen Shelton has a few options:
1. Avoid sharp or straight middle parts that draw immediate attention to new growth.
2. Experiment with messy crisscross parts that allow you to hide roots under layers of hair.
3. Wear hair curly or wavy close to the roots. Textured hair will draw attention away from the root area.
4. Customize an at-home herbal rinse to minimize the roots. Brew and steep herbal tea bags in spring water. Refrigerate the tea overnight and rinse through newly shampooed locks. Try chamomile for blonde strands, raspberry or ginger for red and rosemary or black tea for dark locks. Avoid acidic fruits such as lemons, which can cause even more root discoloration over time.
5. Consider using a vegetable color touch-up stick by Roux for the roots. Another option is using color-enhancing shampoo and conditioner. Concentrate the formula on the roots. Mine, ARTec, Aveda and Mastey all make color shampoos, conditioners and gels that are safe for pregnant women.
