Bug off!
by Nancy and Betsy

If you have bugs in your house - whether it's ants looking for a picnic to crash or mosquitoes wanting a drink - can you still whip out a can of bug spray to get rid of them? As with almost everything during pregnancy, handle these substances with caution. Ohio Ob/Gyn David Barrere, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. says, "Insecticides can be used in areas of good ventilation and limited airborne exposure. Read the labels prior to using any product. Often, insecticides use boric acid as the active ingredient, which can be very harmful if ingested."

Your best bet is to find some super-safe natural methods of pest control, or have someone else handle the spraying. Always err on the side of caution. "Overall, brief exposure isn't likely to be harmful," says Barrere, "but you should take great care to reduce exposure."
