All tips : Get fit : Fitness firsts

Fitness firsts
by Nancy and Betsy

If you're pregnant and new to the fitness scene, what's the best way to start an exercise program? Lisa Stone of Fit for 2 says, "First of all, you need to check with your healthcare provider to make sure you aren't at risk for developing any exercise-related complications during your pregnancy. Assuming you get the okay, walking is a great way to begin. You can either walk in your neighborhood, on a treadmill, on the track at your local school or at the mall. Many malls offer walking programs before business hours."

Lisa also says that, as with any exercise program, you should start slowly. "Try walking at a moderate pace for 15–20 minutes two or three times each week. As you feel stronger, pick up your pace and walk longer distances. You can add hills to your route to challenge yourself even further. Gradually work up to walking at a 15-minutes-per-mile pace for one hour four or five times each week. Be sure to take along a bottle of water and proper identification just in case!"
