Hard, not soft...
by Nancy and Betsy

Hard, not soft... cheese, of course! The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that certain soft cheeses can be contaminated with listeria, a bacteria that can make you quite ill and can be fatal to unborn babies. To protect yourself and your little one, the FDA says to avoid the following soft cheeses while you are pregnant:

  • Feta
  • Brie
  • Camembert
  • Blue-veined cheeses, like Roquefort
  • Mexican-style cheeses like queso blanco and asadero

If you do use soft cheeses during pregnancy, cook them until they boil. On the "safe" list: hard cheeses, semi-soft cheeses (such as mozzarella), pasteurized processed cheeses (such as slices and spreads), cream cheese and cottage cheese.
