Folate: Are you getting enough?
by Nancy and Betsy

It's been proven to protect your baby against a variety of neural tube disorders (such as spina bifida) if taken before and in the early stages of pregnancy. What is it? Folate, or folic acid — a B vitamin. Named for the Latin folium, meaning leaf, you can get it by eating foliage (such as spinach), peas, fortified cereals and breads, among other foods. Some moms may not get the full 600 micrograms recommended daily, which is why it's important to talk to your caregiver to see if you need a supplement.
