How much weight should you gain during pregnancy? According to nutritionist Martha Belury, PhD, RD, "Doctors usually recommend that women who were at a fairly healthy weight before conception should gain between 25 and 35 pounds during pregnancy. For underweight women, this goal increases to 28–40 pounds, while overweight women are advised to gain weight at a slower pace through the pregnancy." She emphasizes, “A woman should never seek to lose weight at any time during her pregnancy.”
