All tips : Healthy ideas : Don't drink the water (on planes)

Don't drink the water (on planes)
by Cyndi Mathews

Think going into labor early or away from home is the reason you don’t want to fly? Think again. The Wall Street Journal had water samples from 14 flights lab-tested for bacteria. In nearly every sample of airplane galley and lavatory water tested, the bacteria level exceeded municipal water bacteria tolerance levels by as much as 16,000 times. (You don't even want to know the details of all the gross stuff they found.)

Some of the worst offenders seemed to be National Airlines, Northwest, American Trans Air and Continental. The airlines were quick to point out that these samples were "unscientific" because the reporters didn't follow precise protocols.

To be on the safe side, the next time you fly, make sure to bring your own bottled water (for drinking and for brushing your teeth) and wet wipes to clean your hands.
