All tips : Nutrition notes : Avoiding food poisoning

Avoiding food poisoning
by Nancy and Betsy

If you think the hormonal fluctuations of pregnancy affect only your mood, think again. They also have been shown to affect your immune system - specifically, increasing your susceptibility to listeriosis.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), pregnant women are about 20 times more likely than other healthy adults to get listeriosis. Worst of all, listeriosis can be transmitted to your baby through the placenta even if you’re not showing signs of illness. This can lead to premature delivery, miscarriage, stillbirth or serious health problems for your little one.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration offer the following advice to help you avoid listeria:

  • Don’t eat hot dogs, lunchmeats or deli meats unless they are reheated until steaming hot.

  • Don’t eat soft cheeses (such as feta, Brie and Camembert), blue-veined cheeses or Mexican-style cheeses such as "queso blanco fresco." (Hard cheeses, semi-soft cheeses such as mozzarella, pasteurized processed cheese slices and spreads, cream cheese and cottage cheese are okay to eat.)

  • Don’t eat refrigerated pâté or meat spreads. What’s safe: Canned or shelf-stable pâté and meat spreads.

  • Don’t eat refrigerated smoked seafood unless it is an ingredient in a cooked dish, such as a casserole. Examples of refrigerated smoked seafood include salmon, trout, whitefish, cod, tuna and mackerel (often labeled as "nova-style," "lox," "kippered," "smoked" or "jerky"). This fish is found in the refrigerated section or sold at deli counters of grocery stores and delicatessens. Canned fish such as salmon and tuna, or shelf-stable smoked seafood, may be eaten safely.

  • Don't drink raw (unpasteurized) milk or eat foods that contain unpasteurized milk.
