Maternity leave: Never let them see you sweat
by Betty Holcomb
Given the differences among bosses, companies and women with their own temperaments and talents, negotiating a maternity leave is a different experience for each and every one of us. But my friend Bonnie told me one thing that I have never forgotten, and I pass along the thought to all moms in the workplace - not only for this negotiation, but also for all the other negotiations you’ll be doing now that you have a demanding life outside of work. "Never show your weak side," Bonnie said to me. In other words, go into the negotiation believing that, if you don’t get what you want and need, you can walk away and they will be the losers.
In her case, she got exactly the leave she wanted, in part because she never let down her guard. "They were very accommodating about maternity leave because they wanted to ensure I’d come back. No one else can do the things I know how to do. So they let me work at home whenever I needed to, and let me take a little longer than official policy allows," says Bonnie. "Financially, I can't afford to quit. But I'd never tell them that. It would make me vulnerable." - From The Best Friend's Guide To Maternity Leave: Making The Most Of Your Precious Time At Home, by Betty Holcomb
